WHAT QUALIFIES FOR ‘ISPM’

Solid wood packaging carrying an internationally recognised mark & Processed wood packaging (plywood/composite using glue heat and pressure)

IPPC symbol and a manufacturer’s code must appear on solid wood packaging. The National Standards Authority of Ireland issues these stamps to suppliers of wooden packaging.

REASON FOR ‘ISPM 15’

The opportunity for the spread of pests in wood packaging worldwide has prompted a World Trade Organisation treaty (march 2002) which puts the weight of 115 countries behind a range of measures first proposed by the International Plant Protection Convention.

From January 2 2004 all wooden packaging imported into the USA, Canada and Mexico will have to conform to ‘ISPM 15’

FUTURE

The European Union is expected to adopt the standard in July 2004 for products imported into EU member states from non-EU countries.

TO QUALIFY FOR IPPC

Suppliers must submit to regular audits to confirm they are operating an approved treatment for killing or removal of pests, these are special heat treatments or fumigation treatments.
